Loftus House
Huck knocked on an old lady’s door and she let
him in. Huck told her his name was Sarah Williams. He claimed to be from
Hookerville an was going to see his uncle. They talk for a while. They talk
about how Jim ran away the same night that Huck was “killed”. There was a three
hundred dollar reward for Jim and a two hundred dollar reward for Pap. The old
lady continues to talk about how people were looking for Jim on Johnson Island.
Huck gets nervous and starts to thread a needle. Huck’s hands were shaking and
he is doing a bad job of threading the needle. They continue to talk about how
people are going up to the island to look for Jim. The old lady asks Huck what
his name is. Huck says his name is Mary Williams instead of Sarah Williams. The
old lady picks up on this and Huck tries to say that his name is Sarah Mary
Williams. The old woman continues to talk. They start to talk about rats and
how you needed to keep something around you to throw at them. She tries to hit
a rat but misses, she then tells Huck to try, and he hits the rat on the nose.
The old woman then drop a lump of lead in Huck’s lap and he clapped his legs on
it. The old woman takes notice of this and asks Huck’s real name. Huck decides
not to push his luck any further and says his name is George Peters. The old
lady then sends Huck off. Huck rushes to Johnson Island and tells Jim they need
to be off. They set off down the Mississippi River.
